Honor 9: Everything we know so far

In this post, which will be updated regularly, we take a closer look at the latest rumors surrounding the upcoming Honor 9.

The Honor 8 has proven itself to be quite popular among consumers thanks to its good looks and a great price-performance ratio. It sold more than 1.5 million units in the first two months since its release. We’re looking forward to seeing what its successor, the Honor 9, will bring to the table.

There have been a bunch of rumors going around regarding the smartphone lately, which you can take a closer look at in this post. You’ll find all the details about the Honor 9 release date, specs, design, price, and more down below.

As always, keep in mind that these are all just rumors for now. The company hasn’t confirmed any of them and doesn’t plan on sharing any specific details with the public before the official reveal of the Honor 9, which is just around the corner.

Honor 9: release date

The Honor 8 was officially announced in July 2016 in China and then went on sale in the US and Europe a month later, in August. It looks like the company will speed things up a bit this year, although not by much.

A promotional poster for the Honor 9 has recently leaked, showing that the smartphone might be announced on June 12 at a press event in Shanghai, China. You can check it out below.

Unfortunately, there’s no official word on when the smartphone will be released. If it does get announced in June, it will probably go up for pre-order in China right away and then make its way to the US and Europe in July — we hope. There’s still a chance you’ll have to wait until August to get your hands on it, but that seems unlikely at this point.

Honor 9: specs

The upcoming Honor 9 has stopped by TENAA recently, which means we know exactly what it will offer in terms of hardware. As expected, it will feature high-end specs, as it will be powered by the Kirin 960 chipset and come with either 4 or 6 GB of RAM. Both versions will offer 64 GB of storage, which you’ll likely be able to expand for an additional 256 GB with the help of a microSD card.

Just like its predecessor, the Honor 9 will be equipped with a dual-camera setup on the back. This has also been confirmed by the promotional poster already mentioned in the release date section above, which shows two cameras alongside the number 9. The main camera setup features 20 and 12 MP sensors, while the front-facing selfie snapper has an 8 MP sensor.

The smartphone will sport a 5.15-inch display with Full HD resolution and pack a 3,100 mAh battery. It is expected to ship with Android Nougat on board with the latest version of Huawei’s EMUI user interface on top.

It looks like the upcoming smartphone will ditch the headphone jack. This is based on the image leaked by The Tech Point that shows the bottom as well as the top of the Honor 9.

As you can see, the 3.5 mm headphone jack is missing, which means that you’ll have to plug in your headphones with the help of an adapter that will hopefully be included in the retail box.

Honor 9: design

Quite a few images of the Honor 9 have popped up online so far, giving us a great look at its design. The first picture was revealed by TENAA on its website, which you can check out below.

It shows that the upcoming smartphone looks a little bit different than its predecessor. It has a glass back that’s slightly curved on the sides, which should make the device sit better in the hand. The biggest difference when it comes to design is probably the fingerprint scanner, as it has been moved from the back to the front.

Huawei did the same thing with its flagship devices, the P10 and P10 Plus. Both of them have the fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button, while their predecessors have it on the back, below the camera.

One more thing worth pointing out is that the upcoming smartphone doesn’t have the Honor branding on the front anymore. You’ll still see it on the back, though.

The image posted online by TENAA shows us that the Honor 9 will be available in what looks to be a gold color option. However, you’ll be able to get your hands on a few additional color variants including blue, sky blue, yellow, white, and gray. This has been revealed by images leaked by Price Raja, which you can check out in the gallery below.

In addition to the colors mentioned above, it looks like the smartphone will also be available in black. Two images of the Honor 9 in the black color option have also leaked and show us the front, the back, as well as the side of the device.

Honor 9: price

Just like its predecessor, the Honor 9 is expected to offer great bang for the buck. Pricing obviously hasn’t been confirmed yet, but rumors have it that the smartphone with 4 GB of RAM will cost 2,299 yuan, while the version with 6 GB of RAM will set you back 2,599 yuan.

This comes out to around $335 and $380, but it’s worth pointing out that prices in the US are expected to be higher than those in China. When launched, the Honor 8 with 32 GB of storage retailed for $399, while the 64 GB model was priced at $449. The best-case scenario is that the Honor 9 will cost the same as its predecessor, although there’s still a chance that the company might slightly increase the prices this year.

In Europe, the pricing for the Honor 8 initially started at £369.99 or €399, although it did vary quite a bit from country to country. Again, we expect that you’ll be able to get the Honor 9 for around the same amount of money once it’s released, or maybe a little bit more. The company probably has no intention of drastically increasing prices, as Honor is known as a budget-friendly brand.

These are all the rumors we have heard regarding the Honor 9 so far. We’ll update this page as soon as we hear more.
