Android is getting Duet, a popular iOS secondary display app

Fans of Android are well aware of the gap that exists between apps on the platform vs. iOS. This gap applies to apps that are available on both operating systems, but even more so towards apps that we can only find on iOS without a true option on Android. Finally, an app that has been previously developed only on iOS is making its debut to Android users.

Duet is an app — developed by a team of former Apple engineers — that lets you turn your phone, tablet, or Chromebook into a secondary display for your Windows or Mac computer.

Using the app seems to be pretty straightforward. You install Duet on your computer, download it on the device you want to use as the secondary display, launch both programs, and connect with a USB cable — POOF, you’re extra productive.

The team at Duet says that there is zero lag and is supposed to be very battery efficient. It’s great to see that the ability to use touchscreen functions (like pinch to zoom and scrolling) will still be available on your secondary display.

The system requirements to use the app only details software needed, so it’s unclear what is going to be needed from a processor, RAM, or graphics card standpoint. As for those software requirements, however, Duet works with all Android devices running 7.1 or newer, Macs on 10.14 Mojave or later, and all PCs running Windows 10 or later.

While the app isn’t available to download just yet for Android, it is up for pre-register in the Google Play Store — indicating that it should launch soon for everyone to use.

High productivity, lower cost

The best hybrid smartwatches you can buy in 2019

Smartwatches are great tools for staying on top of your notifications, tracking your activity, and more. However, nothing beats that classic look of an analog watch strapped to your wrist. Analog watches are simple, classy, and look much better than most smartwatches when you’re dressing up. If you want a wearable that looks like an analog watch but can also track your activity and give you notifications, look no further — we’ve rounded up some of the best hybrid smartwatches on the market.

Best hybrid smartwatches:

Best hybrid smartwatches update: October 1, 2019, 12:00 am

This month we added the Garmin Vivomove 3 lineup to our list.

Garmin Vivomove 2019

garmin vivomove 2019 luxe hybrid smartwatch 2

Garmin Vivomove Luxe

We have yet to review the Garmin Vivomove 3, but if it’s anything like the Vivomove HR it’ll be one of the best hybrid smartwatches around. The Vivomove 3 line features a hidden display that only activates when you need it. There are more expensive models in the Garmin Vivomove 2019 refreshed lineup, but the cheaper Vivomove 3 and 3S only have one screen.

They all come with plenty of advanced features compared to the original Vivomove. They all have pulse oximeter sensors, Garmin’s Body Battery feature, Garmin Pay, connected GPS, five-day battery in smartwatch mode, and up to an additional week of battery life in time mode.

There are a total of 16 new styles of Vivomove 2019 watches. The 42mm Vivomove Luxe is the most luxurious model, sporting a domed sapphire crystal lens on the front. The Vivomove Style features an aluminum bezel and case with a Gorilla Glass lens and comes with either silicone or woven nylon straps. The Vivomove 3S (39mm) and Vivomove 3 (44mm) both come with silicone straps, stainless steel cases, as well as a single AMOLED display and retail for $249.

Skagen Connected

Black on black Skagen Holst hybrid watch at CES 2019

Skagen Holst hybrid smartwatch

Skagen has a number of great hybrid smartwatches under the Skagen Connected brand. The tried-and-true favorite at Android Authority is the Skagen Jorn, but the Holst colorways launched at CES 2019 are hard to pass up, too. For women looking for a great hybrid smartwatch, the Skagen Mini Hald is a great option.

No matter which model you choose, you’ll get three physical buttons on the side that can be programmed to control your phone’s music/volume, act as a camera shutter button, show the date or a secondary time zone, or show your daily step count.

In addition, the watches provide vibration alerts for text, calls, and emails, and they’ll keep track of your sleep if you choose to wear it at night. They even run on a standard CR2412 coin cell battery, so you won’t need to charge them.

Withings Steel HR Sport

Promotional images of the Withings Steel HR Sport Smartwatch. Withings

The Withings Steel HR Sport is Withings’ beefiest hybrid smartwatch. In our opinion it’s not nearly the prettiest (see below), but it’s the most powerful by far.

Like the Steel HR before it, the Steel HR Sport has a small digital display that shows you your daily activity stats, heart rate, and smartphone notifications. It’s also water resistant down to 50 meters, records your VO2 Max, and lasts a whopping 25 days on a single charge.

Fossil Carlie and Fossil Neutra

Fossil Carlie hybrid smartwatch

Fossil has one of the biggest selections of hybrid smartwatches out there, and our favorites are the Fossil Carlie and Fossil Neutra.

Announced at CES 2019, both hybrid smartwatches track your fitness, give you smartphone notifications, and have three customizable buttons on the right side of the casing.

The Fossil Carlie will appeal to people with smaller wrists. The stainless steel casing is just 37mm wide and supports 16mm interchangeable straps. It’s also one of the best looking hybrid watches we’ve ever seen.

Fossil Neutra hybrid smartwatch

The Fossil Neutra is a bit bigger at 37mm wide, though it also supports 16mm interchangeable straps. It offers all the same functionality as the Carlie model, just in a different form factor.

Withings Move and Withings Move ECG

Withings knocked it out of the park with its latest hybrid smartwatches, the Withings Move and Move ECG. Both hybrid smartwatches are on the cheaper side, but they shouldn’t be overlooked if you just need your basic activity metrics tracked.

Neither device has a heart rate sensor, though they both offer connected GPS functionality. They’ll also keep track of your steps taken, calories burned, sleep, distance traveled, and elevation. Of course, the Withings Move ECG also has an electrocardiogram on board so you can keep track of your heart health.

The only downside is that neither device supports smartphone notifications. They’re basically just fitness trackers disguised as analog watches.

The standard Withings Move can actually be customized on Withings.com, allowing you to choose your own dial, watch face, strap, and case color. The Move ECG can’t be customized, unfortunately.

Google Photos now lets you manage your smart display with ‘Photo frames’

We’re learning of a new feature rolling out to Google Photos from a recent post on Reddit. The post includes a first look of the new “Photo frames” option found in the overflow menu of the app.

By tapping on Photo frames, it takes you to a screen which will allow you to manage what albums are shown on your smart display or Chromecast enabled TV. The displays are organized by room and then the name of the connected display.

The option to display your photos on a smart display is nothing new. Google has offered this feature for a long time now, but finding it required digging deep into the Home app. Placing it in Google Photos makes it much more accessible.

Besides making a lot of sense, the new Photo frames shortcut in Google Photos ties in perfectly with the recently announced “Memories” feature.

This flashback feature was first announced by Google back in September and uses machine learning to show your best photos. What better place to show them than your smart display or TV?

Along with Photo frames, you probably noticed the other “NEW” Print store feature in the screenshot. In case you hadn’t heard, Google announced the ability to print photos with same-day pickup from CVS recently. So, whether you want to display your photos digitally on your smart display or create a physical album, Google Photos has you covered.

If you’re not seeing the Photo frames option in the app yet, then you’re not alone. It hasn’t shown up for me either, but in typical Google fashion the new feature should roll out to everyone over the next couple of weeks.

Release date, game modes, classes, and more!

Call of Duty: Mobile is the latest mobile-focused entry in the all-conquering series, and it’s finally available on the Play Store! Here’s everything we know about CoD Mobile so far!

What is Call of Duty: Mobile?

The Call of Duty: Mobile splash screen.

Call of Duty: Mobile is a multiplayer shooter just like the rest of the franchise. The difference is that this mobile game is free-to-play. So far, the game seems nigh-on identical to Call of Duty: Legends of War, a Tencent-developed game that soft-launched in alpha late last year. But the Legends of War tagline has obviously been dropped in favor of the Mobile moniker.

Users can play in several of the multiplayer games modes they have come to love from other Call of Duty games, including Team Deathmatch, Search and Destroy, Domination, Free-For-All, Frontline, Hardpoint, and even Battle Royale. More modes, content, and events will be released on a regular basis. It’s available for both Android and iOS.

Out of the box, users are able to play Frontline, Team Deathmatch, and Practice versus AI. Domination and Search and Destroy are unlocked when you reach level five. Want to play Battle Royale? Then you’ll need to wait until you hit level seven.

When is the Call of Duty: Mobile release date?

The official Call of Duty: Mobile launch date is today (October 1, 2019).

Is it free?

call of duty mobile currency

Call of Duty: Mobile is free-to-play, although it uses CP virtual currency to buy items. In Europe, the cost to buy this virtual currency ranges from €1.09 to €109.99. Items available for sale include skinned weapons, loot crates, vehicles, weapon XP cards, and other items.

The company has also launched a Premium Pass option, and purchasing this entitles users to more CP virtual currency and item rewards. We’ll need more time with the game to figure out if the virtual currency and Premium Pass offerings end up making it a pay-to-win experience.

Activision is also enticing people to play often by offering daily login bonuses such as special items, weapon XP cards, and other goodies. Finally, the publisher also lets users watch video ads in exchange for goodies.

What is Call of Duty: Mobile gameplay like?

A Call of Duty: Mobile screenshot.

It looks like the game will feature 60fps gameplay, the aforementioned multiplayer modes, and several classic Call of Duty maps like Nuketown, Crash, Hijacked, Crossfire, Standoff, Killhouse, and Firing Range. You will also be able to play as many iconic characters from the franchise, such as Price and Ghost.

Call of Duty: Mobile’s Battle Royale mode will work as expected with a few welcome additions. The mode supports up to 100 players in single, two-person, or four-person teams who will fight in maps designed exclusively for the game. Players will fight as one of several different classes including Defender, Mechanic, Scout, Clown, Medic, and Ninja. Maps pit players against one another across land, sea, and air with ATVs, helicopters, and tactical rafts.

Of course, the game will feature touch controls since it is a mobile game, but we aren’t sure if it will also launch with controller support. Overall the game’s performance and various game modes all look very promising.

For what it’s worth, it seems like Call of Duty: Mobile uses bots for the first few games (at least in our first few matches thus far). This isn’t unheard of, as the likes of PUBG and other mobile titles do this as well.

How configurable is it?

Different menu screens in Call of Duty: Mobile.Activision

Activision previously released information about the game’s settings and loadouts. The settings are quite configurable, allowing players to choose things like aim sensitivity, pick and fine-tune the gyroscope function for aiming, toggle sprint to always-on, and tweak the camera field-of-vision.

The game also offers two modes: simple and advanced. Simple mode auto-fires at enemies when the reticle is focused on them, while advanced requires the player to manually fire. Advanced mode also lets the player choose how to hold different weapon types and customize the HUD.

Loadouts are also configurable in Call of Duty: Mobile. Players can pick a primary and secondary weapon, skins for each of their weapons, and explosive or tactical grenades. There are also weapon skills and upgrades like in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 and up to three perks can be chosen for each loadout. Players can also level up their weapons as they play with each one.

Can I play CoD Mobile with my friends online?

One of the biggest draws to the Call of Duty franchise in the past has been the multiplayer online gameplay. Call of Duty: Mobile is no different, and players can compete alongside or against friends and strangers from all over the world. At this point, we aren’t sure if Android and iOS versions will support crossplay or if players will be matched up with people on the same platform.

What is the leveling system like?

The Call of Duty: Mobile loadout page.

As well as weapon skills, we know that CoD Mobile adopts many elements from other games in the franchise. It will feature scorestreaks instead of killstreaks which give players in-game access to tools like the Recon Car, UAV, Air Supply Drop, hunter drones, and VTOL. The franchise has had pretty robust leveling systems in the past, so as long as the game isn’t pay-to-win, we have high hopes for this one too.

Is it available in my country?

Call of Duty: Mobile launches worldwide, excluding Mainland China, Vietnam, and Belgium. As of October 1 (3AM ET) Android Authority writers in Germany, India, South Africa, Spain, and the UK report that they’re able to download it. So it looks like this isn’t a staggered rollout by any means.

Here’s every U.S. city with 5G coverage right now

All of the major U.S. carriers are hard at work on their 5G strategy. AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon have launched 5G networks and are aggressively expanding those networks through 2019. 5G service not only provides faster speeds but also reduced response times allowing for new services and cloud computing not previously available. For now, the major difference between LTE and 5G will be speed but as coverage continues to roll out to new areas, more services that rely on instant connectivity should become possible.

Verizon

Verizon is starting small with two cities deploying what it calls 5G Ultra Wideband (UWB). In short, this version of 5G uses large chunks of high frequency bandwidth that produce very high speeds but suffer in other areas such as coverage over distance and building penetration. While coverage is dense enough in cities to be included on the list, Verizon is being conservative and offering much more specific descriptions of tower locations.

At this time, it is easy to be discouraged about such minimal 5G coverage but this deployment is only a start for Verizon — it has 14 cities still listed as “coming soon.” Early tests have been positive with us seeing speeds up to 1.4 Gbps. Although these massive speeds are impressive, they probably won’t hold up under a full Chicago load, but it’s still exciting to see.

We’re also seeing more specific expansion to places like NFL stadiums or race tracks. While great as a tech demonstration, this really doesn’t offer much to the customer just yet.

Ultra Wideband Service

A fast-growing millimeter wave network

High speed downloads and a quickly expanding network make Verizon’s 5G implemenation of the most complete in the nation.

Sprint is bringing its 2.5Ghz 5G to its Overland Park, KS location as well as the nearby Kansas City. They also provide 5G in seven other cities with more to follow later this year. With a good selection of 5G compatible devices such as a hotspot and several phones, Sprint’s 5G network is the closest to being fully useable with good coverage density, similar to LTE, and speeds around 300Mbps in our testing.

While Sprint customers wait to see how a potential merger with T-Mobile might pan out, Sprint has moved ahead with its service upgrades and even shows its 5G coverage alongside 4G on its coverage maps to demonstrate its confidence. Sprint has also announced that is continuing to improve it’s 5G footprint with expanded coverage in Kansas City, Atlanta, Dallas, and Houston.

It looks like Sprint might be one of the best options for 5G in the near future as long as the network can handle the load. Sprint is putting its 5G to work already with improvements coming to emergency serivices already. If nothing else, it is better than LTE so I’ll take it.

Mid-band 5G

2.5Ghz means better coverage and stable speeds

More coverage makes Sprint’s 5G network a strong option with speeds that are much faster than 4G. This 5G service will cover more people with less towers and few dropped connections.

T-Mobile

T-Mobile is the last of the Big Four to offer a 5G option. With a network much more similar to Verizon’s in tech, T-Mobile’s 5G deployment will be built on millimete wave technology at 28Ghz. The long and short of that is a strength in speed and a weakness in coverage. I am eagerly waiting to see what a combined Sprint and T-Mobile 5G network looks like once New T-Mobile is fully up and running.

Millimeter Wave 5G

High speed 5G

T-Mobile is building its 5G network to favor speed over coverage and isn’t charging customers any more to get on it. With T-Mobile, all you need is the phone and coverage to get 5G.

AT&T

AT&T certainly has one of the most impressive lists of cities with available 5G coverage. AT&T has launched its 5G network for business use with a hotspot from Netgear and the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G. AT&T is using millimeter wave for its current buildout but has announced that they intend to start building out on sub-6 spectrum in 2019 which should help with coverage immensely.

That’s not necessarily a bad plan while the network works its way up to strength and phones become more readily available, and AT&T certainly seems poised to offer a strong network. If you are a consumer waiting to see that “5G” pop up on your phone, then you will need to wait a bit longer or see if another carrier provides service today.

If you don’t have a business account, you don’t have access to 5G. AT&T has added a section to its phone specifications called “5G Evolution Capable.” This stat doesn’t say anything about whether a phone is 5G capable and only refers to modern 4G LTE as 5Ge service is actually 4G LTE Advanced. Every other carrier calls this LTE, LTE-A, or LTE Plus.
